It was insulting, to be quite frank. Did Draco honestly think he could steal from his supplies and that it wouldn't be noticed? It was obvious to him not only that a theft had occurred, but also what the intended potion was. He might have, like Draco had hoped, guessed it was students making the Draught of the Living Death, save for the fact that the Draught of the Living Death contained belladonna, and he had taken powdered mandrake root and a few other things which made it quite obvious that his intention was to make Elixir of Dementor's Bane.
To what do I owe the pleasure. He's playing innocent. No, worse, he knows well what he's done and thinks he's outsmarted him. Snape has half a mind to remind Draco that he's not yet too old to be punished, because clearly it's something he failed to learn during his studies.
"Nothing in particular," he says coolly, not giving anything away. He's moving slowly, as if he were coming for a casual visit.
"Still grading those essays?" Snape asks with a sort of detached disinterest, and pauses near an empty cage to the front of the classroom, a lingering remnant from the days when Lockhart filled the post. Turning, he caught Draco's eyes and began some... not so idle conversation.
"There was only one first year whose essays were ever worth reading. Not that I'd ever encourage her by telling her as much... but, I have to admit, Miss Granger did dig into a realm of information that the rest of you probably still don't know. For example, do you know that legend says the mandrake will only grow where the semen of a hanged man has dripped on the ground?"
That's all he says. Now he's waiting, dark eyes boring into Draco's skull because he's not talking about Granger's trivia or student papers, but he's talking about the mandrake and a handful of other pricy (and not so pricy, but that's hardly the point) herbs and solutions that Draco has so boldly taken from his cabinet.
Snape has made it quite clear that he knows, and now he's giving Draco the opportunity to at least own up to what he's done.
